Rheumatology

Curriculum vitae

Veronica Brusi

I specialized in Rheumatology, at the University of Bologna in 2011. Since then I have been working at the SSD of Medicine and Rheumatology of the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute, first as an LP contractor and, since 16/01/2020 as Medical Director of Rheumatology. I deal with the outpatient management of all the main rheumatological diseases, including both diseases with prevalent joint involvement (arthritis and osteoarthritis) and connectivitis, and the main metabolic diseases of the adult bone (osteoporosis and Paget's disease). In the field of instrumental diagnostics, I deal with capillaroscopy, necessary for the classification of patients with Raynaud's phenomenon. I follow the diagnostic framework and the follow up of the patients in therapy with biotechnological drugs. One of the main research interests, in this regard, has been to participate in the creation of a biobank for the study of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, from early stage to more severe forms that require major immunosuppressive therapies, i.e. with biotechnological drugs or with the newest JAK kinase inhibitors.

Insights

Rheumatoid arthritis

The best known of chronic inflammatory joint diseases is symmetric polyarthritis which mainly affects the hands, wrists, feet and knees. It can begin in the first decades of life, but also in older age. In addition to joint involvement, the disease can also have systemic manifestations, therefore it requires a general framework that considers the patient as a whole. Therapy is mainly based on immunosuppressive background drugs.

Psoriatic arthritis

Chronic inflammatory joint pathology, typical of subjects with personal and / or family history of psoriasis. Clinically very heterogeneous, it ranges from severe and aggressive manifestations affecting the joints of the limbs and / or the axial skeleton, to decidedly lighter and more nuanced forms. Therapy ranges from the use of common anti-inflammatories to immunosuppressive background drugs.

Fibromyalgia

Chronic condition, non-inflammatory or degenerative, characterized by widespread pain, frequently accompanied by chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances and easy fatigue.
